Darts evolved from being a mere pub sport into one that entertains thousands of fans at huge-capacity arenas, along with hundreds of thousands watching at home.
That evolution led to an increase in both the number of players and fans. In fact, darts is now one of the most popular sports in the UK. In a country where sports is dominated by football, cricket, and rugby, darts is many sports fans’ second or third favourite sport.
Globally, darts is now on par with MMA or boxing in terms of prize money and popularity. And with more than 50 million around the world playing, darts has become one of the world’s most popular sports.
Darts Schedule
Another reason for the rise in popularity of darts has been its scheduling. While darts has risen to the level of arenas, it’s still often played in pubs and bars, This has resulted in matches taking place in afternoons and evenings.
That it’s played in the evenings means that the masses can enjoy weeknight fixtures. Even those weekend evening fixtures help to attract viewers, as they’re shown after Saturday afternoon football, ideal for those who already have sports withdrawal symptoms once football is over.
The main darts organisation in the UK is the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The PDC established and still runs multiple leagues and competitions, including the Premier League, the UK Open, and the PDC World Darts Championship.
The Premier League was launched in 2005 and features 10 big names from the PDC circuit playing as a part of a league table over a five-month period, with matches taking place at various locations in the UK. Phil Taylor won the first eight titles and Michael van Gerwen winning the tournament several times.
The UK Open takes place each June at Butlin’s, Minehead. Some 168 players take part in the three-day single elimination tournament. Known as the FA Cup of darts, Phil Taylor is once again the man, having won the tournament a record five times.
